Dandekar Bridge Pune: Location, Route, Traffic & Nearby Areas

Dandekar Bridge is an important road landmark and traffic junction in Pune, Maharashtra, located where Lal Bahadur Shastri Road meets Sinhagad Road. Commonly called Dandekar Pul, the bridge and the surrounding junction form a key connection between central Pune neighbourhoods such as Sadashiv Peth, Navi Peth and Parvati and the rapidly developed Sinhagad Road corridor.

Unlike Pune’s prominent river bridges, Dandekar Bridge does not cross the Mutha River itself. A detailed traffic study of the junction identifies it as the point where Lal Bahadur Shastri Road passes over a major nalla before terminating at Sinhagad Road. The bridge name has gradually become associated with the entire surrounding neighbourhood and the busy Dr. Ambedkar Chowk junction.

Its importance comes mainly from traffic movement. Vehicles travelling from central Pune towards Dattawadi, Panmala, Anand Nagar, Vadgaon Budruk, Dhayari, Nanded City and Khadakwasla commonly pass through the wider Dandekar Bridge-Sinhagad Road corridor. The area is also expected to gain greater public-transport importance because Pune Metro’s approved Kharadi-Khadakwasla Line 4 will run along Sinhagad Road.

A 2025 traffic-flow study describes Dandekar Bridge as a high-volume signalised junction connecting an important east-west arterial road with a north-south collector road.

Where is Dandekar Bridge Located?

Dandekar Bridge is located on the south-western side of central Pune, close to Dattawadi, Parvati and Navi Peth.

The principal junction is formed by Sinhagad Road, officially Narveer Tanaji Malusare Road, and Lal Bahadur Shastri Road. Lal Bahadur Shastri Road approaches from the central-city side and ends at Sinhagad Road, creating a T-junction beside the bridge.

PMC’s road records also identify the Sinhagad Road stretch leading towards Dandekar Bridge as part of the main Sinhagad Road network.

This location makes Dandekar Bridge an important transition point. Travellers coming from older central Pune neighbourhoods can enter the Sinhagad Road corridor here, while motorists arriving from Dhayari, Vadgaon Budruk and Anand Nagar can continue towards Swargate, Parvati, Navi Peth and other central areas.

Dandekar Bridge Route and Road Connectivity

Dandekar Bridge provides access to two major local traffic corridors.

Sinhagad Road runs broadly east-west through the junction. Towards the city side, it provides connections towards Swargate and central Pune. In the opposite direction, it continues through Panmala, Vitthalwadi, Anand Nagar and Vadgaon Budruk before extending towards Dhayari, Nanded and Khadakwasla.

Lal Bahadur Shastri Road approaches the junction from the north and provides access towards Navi Peth, Sadashiv Peth and the Deccan-central Pune road network. The road crosses the nalla at Dandekar Bridge immediately before meeting Sinhagad Road.

Important connections include:

  • Dattawadi: One of the closest residential areas and an important link towards central Pune.
  • Navi Peth: Accessible through Lal Bahadur Shastri Road and surrounding streets.
  • Parvati: Major residential and historic area close to Dandekar Bridge.
  • Swargate: Important transport hub reached through the central-road network.
  • Panmala: Located along Sinhagad Road immediately beyond Dandekar Bridge.
  • Anand Nagar: Major residential locality farther west on Sinhagad Road.
  • Vadgaon Budruk: Large residential area along the Sinhagad Road corridor.
  • Dhayari: Important south-west Pune suburb reached beyond Vadgaon Budruk.
  • Khadakwasla: Accessible by continuing along the western Sinhagad Road route.

PMPML route information also shows several services travelling through Dandekar Pul and Sinhagad Road towards areas such as Vadgaon, Dhayari, Nanded and Khadakwasla.

Why is Dandekar Bridge Important?

Dandekar Bridge is important less for the size of the physical bridge and more for its position in Pune’s road network.

Sinhagad Road carries a large volume of traffic from expanding residential areas in south-west Pune. At Dandekar Bridge, this traffic interacts with vehicles travelling to and from older central Pune neighbourhoods through Lal Bahadur Shastri Road.

A seven-day traffic survey conducted for a 2025 junction study identified consistently high traffic volumes, delays and queues at Dandekar Bridge. The researchers described it as an important connecting node between residential and commercial areas.

The junction is therefore useful for:

  • Daily commuters from the Sinhagad Road belt
  • Residents travelling towards central Pune
  • PMPML bus movement
  • Students travelling to educational institutions around Parvati and central Pune
  • Shoppers and workers heading towards Swargate and the peth areas
  • Motorists travelling towards Khadakwasla and the Sinhagad side

Traffic Conditions at Dandekar Bridge

Traffic congestion is one of the defining features of the Dandekar Bridge junction.

The intersection is signal-controlled and handles several turning movements. A field-based traffic analysis found that all three approaches at the studied junction carried two-way traffic, with three lanes in each direction in the surveyed geometry. The same study identified signal coordination and conflicting vehicle movements as important contributors to queues and delays.

Traffic is generally more difficult during:

  • Morning office and school hours
  • Evening commuting periods
  • Peak movement on Sinhagad Road
  • Heavy rainfall
  • Large local gatherings
  • Temporary traffic diversions
  • Road or utility work

The area’s vulnerability during heavy rain has also been documented. In June 2025, water stagnation was reported around Dattawadi, Dandekar Bridge and the Nilayam Talkies stretch during intense rainfall.

Large public events can also temporarily alter traffic patterns. During Ambedkar Jayanti in April 2026, Pune Traffic Police imposed diversions around the Dandekar Bridge-Sinhagad Road junction because of expected gatherings at the chowk.

What Does Dandekar Bridge Actually Cross?

This is an important point because online descriptions sometimes loosely associate Dandekar Bridge with the nearby Mutha River.

The physical Dandekar Bridge at the junction is identified in traffic-engineering research as the structure where Lal Bahadur Shastri Road crosses a major nalla before reaching Sinhagad Road.

The wider Dandekar Bridge area is nevertheless closely associated with Pune’s water infrastructure. The Mutha Right Bank Canal passes through the surrounding locality. In September 2018, a canal-wall breach near Janata Vasahat caused extensive flooding around Dandekar Bridge and adjoining settlements.

Therefore, Dandekar Bridge should not be described as a major Mutha River crossing like Rajaram Bridge or other river bridges in Pune. It is primarily a smaller urban bridge whose name has become much more important as a locality and traffic-junction identifier.

Traffic Improvement Possibilities at Dandekar Bridge

Because congestion occurs at the junction rather than simply on the bridge deck, improvements require changes to overall traffic circulation.

The 2025 traffic study evaluated a possible arrangement involving a two-way flyover along Sinhagad Road combined with a one-way underpass for traffic turning from the Swargate side towards Deccan through the Shastri Road corridor. The simulation suggested that separating through traffic from turning traffic could significantly reduce conflicts and delays.

This was a research proposal rather than confirmation that such a flyover and underpass have been sanctioned for construction. It nevertheless shows why Dandekar Bridge is considered a complicated traffic-management point: congestion comes from several road movements converging within a limited area.

Future Pune Metro Connectivity at Dandekar Bridge

One of the biggest long-term changes for the area will be the expansion of Pune Metro along the Sinhagad Road corridor.

The Union government approved Pune Metro Phase 2 Line 4 from Kharadi to Khadakwasla in November 2025. Maha Metro’s official project information lists the line at 25.52 km with 22 elevated stations, while Line 4A will run from Nal Stop through Warje to Manik Baug.

The route will follow several of Pune’s busiest roads, including Sinhagad Road, and the planned station network includes the Dandekar Pul area.

By mid-2026, Maha Metro had moved into agency appointment and detailed implementation work for parts of the new corridor.

Once operational, the line should provide residents along Sinhagad Road with an alternative to relying entirely on buses, cars and two-wheelers for travel towards central and eastern Pune.

Public Transport Near Dandekar Bridge

Dandekar Bridge is already well served by PMPML buses because of its position on Sinhagad Road.

FAQs About Dandekar Bridge Pune

Q1. Is there a toll for using Dandekar Bridge?

No. Dandekar Bridge is part of Pune’s normal municipal road network and does not operate as a standalone tolled bridge.

Q2. Why is the entire neighbourhood called Dandekar Bridge or Dandekar Pul?

Over time, the bridge became a prominent local landmark and its name extended to the surrounding junction, bus stops and residential area. Today, “Dandekar Pul” can therefore refer to both the physical bridge and the broader locality around Sinhagad Road.

Q3. Is Dandekar Bridge a suitable landmark when booking a cab or bus in Pune?

Yes. Dandekar Bridge/Dandekar Pul is a well-established local transport reference point. PMPML routes use Dandekar Pul as a stop name, making it useful when identifying destinations around Parvati, Dattawadi and the beginning of the Sinhagad Road corridor.

Q4. Will construction of the future Metro affect Dandekar Bridge traffic?

The approved Line 4 will follow Sinhagad Road, so construction activity can eventually require traffic-management arrangements around stations and viaduct work. Exact diversions will depend on the final construction programme and should be checked once Maha Metro and traffic authorities issue specific notices.
