Rajaram Bridge Pune: Location, Route, Traffic & Nearby Areas

Rajaram Bridge is an important road bridge across the Mutha River in Pune, connecting the Sinhagad Road side with Karvenagar. Located near Vitthalwadi and Hingne Khurd, the bridge provides one of the most useful cross-river links for people travelling between Sinhagad Road, Karvenagar, Kothrud, Warje and adjoining western Pune neighbourhoods. Pune Municipal Corporation describes the bridge as a key connection between Sinhagad Road and Karvenagar DP Road.

Its importance has increased considerably as residential development has expanded along Sinhagad Road. Areas such as Vadgaon Budruk, Dhayari, Nanded City and Khadakwasla generate substantial daily traffic, while Karvenagar and Kothrud are major residential, educational and commercial destinations on the opposite side of the river.

Rajaram Bridge has consequently become a recurring traffic bottleneck. The existing crossing is around 15 metres wide, and PMC is now working on plans to increase the overall corridor width to approximately 30 metres with six lanes.

Where is Rajaram Bridge Located?

Rajaram Bridge is located across the Mutha River between the Sinhagad Road-Hingne Khurd/Vitthalwadi belt and Karvenagar. The bridge is commonly used by motorists moving between south-western Pune and the Karve Road-Kothrud side of the city.

The Sinhagad Road end is close to Rajaram Bridge Chowk, an important junction on Narveer Tanaji Malusare Road, commonly known as Sinhagad Road. From this side, motorists can proceed towards Swargate in one direction or towards Vadgaon Budruk, Dhayari, Nanded and Khadakwasla in the other.

After crossing the river towards Karvenagar, the road connects with the local DP Road network. From there, commuters can continue towards Karvenagar, Warje, Kothrud and Karve Road.

This location allows Rajaram Bridge to serve as an important lateral connection rather than simply another bridge across the Mutha.

Rajaram Bridge Route and Road Connectivity

The most important function of Rajaram Bridge is connecting Sinhagad Road with Karvenagar without requiring commuters to travel farther towards central Pune.

Important connections include:

  • Sinhagad Road: Direct connection at the southern end of the bridge.
  • Karvenagar: Reached after crossing the Mutha towards the north-western side.
  • Vitthalwadi: Located close to Rajaram Bridge Chowk on Sinhagad Road.
  • Hingne Khurd: Established residential locality surrounding the bridge approach.
  • Kothrud: Accessible through Karvenagar and Karve Road.
  • Warje: Reachable through the Karvenagar road network.
  • Vadgaon Budruk: Located farther along Sinhagad Road towards the south-west.
  • Dhayari: Major residential area accessed through the Sinhagad Road corridor.
  • Swargate: Accessible by travelling towards the city along Sinhagad Road.

The bridge is also connected with Pune’s developing Shivane-Kharadi road corridor. In February 2026, PMC said that 1,250 metres of the 1,850-metre section between Rajaram Bridge and Jawalkar Garden had been completed, while land acquisition was pending for the remaining portion.

Why is Rajaram Bridge Important?

Rajaram Bridge carries traffic travelling in a direction that the main Sinhagad Road itself cannot serve efficiently.

Sinhagad Road primarily carries movement towards central Pune in one direction and Vadgaon, Dhayari, Nanded and Khadakwasla in the other. Rajaram Bridge allows motorists to leave this corridor and move directly across the Mutha towards Karvenagar and western Pune.

That makes it particularly valuable for commuters travelling between:

  • Sinhagad Road and Karvenagar
  • Dhayari and Kothrud
  • Vadgaon Budruk and Karve Road
  • Nanded City and western Pune
  • Hingne Khurd and Karvenagar

The problem is that increasing traffic has outgrown the present bridge capacity. PMC officials described Rajaram Bridge as an important traffic point because much of the movement between Karvenagar and Sinhagad Road depends on this crossing.

Traffic Conditions at Rajaram Bridge

Traffic congestion is one of the main issues associated with Rajaram Bridge, particularly during weekday morning and evening commuting periods.

The bridge itself is relatively narrow compared with the roads feeding into it. Vehicles arriving from Karvenagar must merge into the Sinhagad Road junction, while traffic from Sinhagad Road simultaneously turns towards the bridge. This creates slowing and vehicle bunching around Rajaram Bridge Chowk.

Conditions improved after Pune’s major Sinhagad Road flyover project became operational in 2025. The nearly 2.5-km flyover system allows through traffic to bypass several busy junctions and was designed to save commuters around 15–25 minutes on longer journeys through the corridor.

However, the river bridge remains a separate bottleneck for vehicles travelling sideways between Sinhagad Road and Karvenagar. PMC therefore began planning additional bridge capacity rather than relying only on the flyovers.

Traffic can be particularly heavy around:

  • Rajaram Bridge Chowk
  • Vitthalwadi
  • Hingne
  • Karvenagar DP Road
  • Vitthal Mandir Chowk on the Karvenagar side
  • Sinhagad Road during office peaks

Motorists should allow additional time during school and office hours because congestion at the approaches can be more significant than the actual time required to cross the river.

Rajaram Bridge Widening and Future Plans

Expansion of Rajaram Bridge is one of the most important upcoming infrastructure changes for this corridor.

In April 2026, PMC moved ahead with plans to widen the connection from approximately 15 metres to 30 metres, effectively creating a six-lane corridor with three lanes in each direction.

The proposal involves constructing an additional bridge section parallel to the existing structure. Preliminary planning indicated that the new wing would likely be developed on the Swargate-facing side. A consultant was being appointed to undertake feasibility studies and finalise the technical design.

PMC has already carried out smaller interventions at the existing bridge, including:

  • Structural strengthening
  • Work on expansion joints
  • Improvements at bridge ends
  • Widening of turning areas
  • Changes intended to improve entry and exit movement

The bridge’s expansion is particularly important because additional lanes on Sinhagad Road have increased the amount of traffic reaching Rajaram Bridge Chowk. Without additional cross-river capacity, the bridge itself can remain a choke point even when the main arterial road moves more efficiently.

Sinhagad Road Flyover and Rajaram Bridge

The large Sinhagad Road flyover project has changed traffic movement around Rajaram Bridge significantly.

The project was developed in multiple sections. One 520-metre flyover section at Rajaram Bridge Chowk opened on August 15, 2024, while additional sections became operational during 2025. The completed system stretches for nearly 2.5 km and was constructed at a reported cost of ₹118 crore.

The flyovers allow motorists travelling along Sinhagad Road to bypass several surface-level junctions. Local traffic heading towards Hingne, Vitthalwadi or Rajaram Bridge continues to use the roads below or approach ramps.

This distinction is important: Rajaram Bridge and the Rajaram Bridge Chowk flyover are not the same structure. Rajaram Bridge crosses the Mutha River towards Karvenagar, while the flyover carries traffic along the Sinhagad Road corridor.

Public Transport Near Rajaram Bridge

Rajaram Bridge lies within an established urban area with access to PMPML buses, auto-rickshaws and app-based cabs.

PMPML routes operate extensively along Sinhagad Road and through Karvenagar, providing connections towards Swargate, Deccan, Kothrud and other parts of Pune.

Metro connectivity is not directly available at the bridge itself. However, Nal Stop metro station on Pune Metro’s Vanaz-Ramwadi corridor can be reached through the Karvenagar/Karve Road side.

Last-mile connectivity improved further in 2026 when a feeder autorickshaw service was introduced from Nal Stop metro station. One of the feeder routes specifically serves the Rajaram Bridge area, with fares on the announced feeder routes ranging from ₹20 to ₹30 depending on distance.

This provides commuters with another option for combining metro and road travel.

FAQs About Rajaram Bridge Pune

Q1. Is Rajaram Bridge currently open to vehicles?

Yes. Recent PMC planning treats the existing Rajaram Bridge as an operational connection while additional capacity is proposed alongside it. Temporary restrictions can still occur during repairs, traffic-management work or construction, so local traffic instructions should be followed.

Q2. Is Rajaram Bridge the same as the Sinhagad Road flyover?

No. Rajaram Bridge is the road bridge crossing the Mutha River towards Karvenagar. The Sinhagad Road flyover runs along the main road and includes a section near Rajaram Bridge Chowk. They are separate structures serving different traffic movements.

Q3. Is a new Rajaram Bridge being constructed or is the existing bridge being replaced?

The current proposal is for additional parallel bridge capacity, effectively widening the corridor from around 15 metres to approximately 30 metres. The existing connection has already undergone strengthening rather than simply being abandoned.

Q4. Can Rajaram Bridge be reached from Pune Metro?

There is no metro station directly at the bridge. Nal Stop is a practical metro access point on the Karvenagar side, and a feeder auto route introduced in 2026 includes Rajaram Bridge among its destinations.
