Elphinstone Bridge was one of Central Mumbai’s most important east-west road links, connecting Parel on the eastern side with Prabhadevi on the western side across the busy Central and Western Railway tracks. Also known as the Elphinstone Road Over Bridge or Prabhadevi ROB, the century-old structure served Mumbai commuters for more than 110 years before being permanently closed in September 2025 for complete reconstruction.
The old bridge, completed in 1913, was fully dismantled on April 5, 2026. It is now being replaced by a modern double-decker road overbridge that will perform two functions. The lower level will restore local east-west connectivity between Parel and Prabhadevi, while the upper level will form part of the Sewri-Worli Elevated Connector linking the Atal Setu side of Mumbai with Worli and the western road network.
As of August 2026, motorists cannot use Elphinstone Bridge because reconstruction is still underway. Although MMRDA’s published project page earlier listed September 2026 as the completion target, a newer July 2026 update from project officials said the reconstructed bridge and Sewri-Worli Connector are now expected to be ready around January-February 2027.

Where is Elphinstone Bridge Located?
Elphinstone Bridge is located in Central Mumbai, between Parel and Prabhadevi. It crosses one of the city’s most heavily used railway corridors and historically provided a direct road link between Dr B. R. Ambedkar Road on the eastern side and Senapati Bapat Road on the western side.
The location is particularly important because railway tracks create a major physical barrier between east and west Mumbai. Relatively few road bridges cross these tracks in the Parel-Dadar-Lower Parel belt, so each crossing handles substantial traffic.
Parel contains major hospitals, offices and residential developments, while Prabhadevi and Lower Parel contain dense residential areas, corporate offices and commercial districts. The bridge therefore served short local journeys as well as longer trips towards Worli, Dadar and South Mumbai.
The railway station once known as Elphinstone Road station was officially renamed Prabhadevi in July 2018, although the road bridge continued to be widely known as Elphinstone Bridge.
Elphinstone Bridge Route and Road Connectivity
Before its closure, Elphinstone Bridge was one of the main road routes for crossing Mumbai’s railway lines in this part of the city.
Important connections around the bridge include:
- Parel: The eastern side of the old bridge, providing access towards Dr B. R. Ambedkar Road.
- Prabhadevi: The western side and one of the principal areas directly served by the bridge.
- Lower Parel: Major office and commercial district accessible through the western road network.
- Worli: Connected through roads from Prabhadevi and Senapati Bapat Road.
- Dadar: Located immediately north, with Tilak Bridge now serving as an important alternative east-west crossing.
- Sewri: Located towards the eastern waterfront and important to the future elevated connector.
- Bandra-Worli Sea Link: Will become more directly accessible through the completed Sewri-Worli road system.
- Atal Setu: The future elevated route is intended to connect the western side of Mumbai with the Mumbai Trans Harbour Link through Sewri.
This east-west role explains why the closure has affected traffic across a much wider part of Central Mumbai rather than only Parel and Prabhadevi.
Why is Elphinstone Bridge Important?
Mumbai’s suburban railway corridors run largely north-south, while many daily road trips need to move east-west. Road overbridges such as Elphinstone therefore play an essential role in joining neighbourhoods located on opposite sides of the tracks.
For more than a century, Elphinstone Bridge connected the former mill districts around Parel with the western side around present-day Prabhadevi. Central Railway records cited during dismantling describe it as a key east-west connection that shaped commuter movement for 113 years.
Its replacement is even more significant because the new structure will no longer serve only local traffic. The upper deck will become part of a regional elevated corridor intended to connect:
Atal Setu → Sewri → Parel/Prabhadevi → Worli → western Mumbai road network.
The redevelopment therefore combines a traditional neighbourhood connection with one of Mumbai’s largest new cross-city transport projects.
Traffic Conditions Around Elphinstone Bridge
The bridge is currently closed, so traffic conditions around Elphinstone are primarily shaped by diversions.
Vehicles that previously crossed between Parel and Prabhadevi have shifted to other railway bridges. Traffic police identified Tilak Bridge at Dadar, Currey Road Bridge and Chinchpokli Bridge as major alternatives.
The resulting pressure has been substantial. Following the bridge closure, alternative crossings experienced heavier traffic, particularly during office hours. The simultaneous closure or repair of several other Central Mumbai bridges has further reduced east-west road capacity.
The principal diversion pattern has included:
- Dadar East–Dadar West traffic using Tilak Bridge
- Parel East traffic towards Prabhadevi and Lower Parel using Currey Road Bridge
- Parel/Byculla East traffic towards Worli, Coastal Road and Sea Link using Chinchpokli Bridge
- Reverse-direction traffic using corresponding crossings according to traffic-police arrangements.
Commuters should check current Mumbai Traffic Police instructions because temporary restrictions can change as construction progresses.
What Happened to the Old Elphinstone Bridge?
The original Elphinstone Road Overbridge was constructed in 1913.
It used steel semi-through girders and masonry construction typical of major railway bridges developed during that period. Railway officials recorded imported steel components, including girders manufactured in Glasgow, while historical plaques identified the structure as Parel Bridge.
After more than a century of use, the bridge had become unsuitable for Mumbai’s modern transport requirements. The structure was permanently closed on September 12, 2025, and dismantling began soon afterward.
Removing it was complicated because trains had to continue running underneath.
Nearly 20 preparatory railway blocks were used to remove road slabs, utilities and footpath components, followed by six major traffic-and-power blocks for the steel structure. Heavy cranes with capacities of up to 800 tonnes were used during the final removal operation.
The final girders came down during the night of April 4-5, 2026, completing the demolition.
New Double-Decker Elphinstone Bridge
The replacement will be considerably more complex than the old bridge.
The lower deck will replace the former Elphinstone ROB and restore direct east-west road travel between Parel and Prabhadevi.
The upper deck will carry the Sewri-Worli Elevated Connector across the railway corridor. This creates a two-level structure rather than simply rebuilding the old road at the same height.
Project plans provide for local road lanes and pedestrian facilities on the lower level, while the upper level will allow through traffic on the elevated corridor to bypass local roads.
The railway-crossing section uses a large 132-metre girder. By late July 2026, prefabricated components manufactured in Noida had reached Mumbai and were being prepared for assembly and launching. Officials expected the railway portion to be structurally ready around November 2026.
Elphinstone Bridge and Sewri-Worli Elevated Connector
The new bridge forms a critical part of the approximately 4.5-km Sewri-Worli Elevated Connector.
The corridor is being built to provide a fast connection between the eastern waterfront and Worli. At Sewri, it will integrate with the road system serving Atal Setu, while the western side will improve access towards Worli and the Bandra-Worli Sea Link network.
For vehicles arriving in Mumbai through Atal Setu, the connector is expected to reduce dependence on congested surface streets through Parel and central Mumbai.
Elphinstone is one of the most technically challenging locations on the project because the new structure must pass across extremely busy railway tracks while fitting between densely developed neighbourhoods on both sides.
Current Status and Expected Opening
The old bridge no longer exists, but its replacement is not yet open as of August 2026.
MMRDA’s project information still carries an earlier expected completion date of September 30, 2026 for the Sewri-Worli Connector.
However, the more recent July 26, 2026 project update reported that this deadline will not be met. Delays have resulted from the longer-than-planned bridge dismantling, railway blocks, utility work, monsoon conditions, labour availability and construction constraints around densely populated Prabhadevi. Officials now expect the overall bridge and connector work to finish around January or February 2027.
For travellers, this means the practical situation remains unchanged for now: Elphinstone Bridge is closed and alternative east-west crossings must be used.
Impact on Mumbai Suburban Railway Expansion
The redevelopment also has an important railway benefit.
Removing the old bridge has created additional space for two more suburban railway tracks between Kurla and Parel, with plans for those lines eventually to extend towards CSMT under wider railway-capacity improvements.
The new bridge has therefore been designed for a different railway environment from the one that existed in 1913.
Instead of reproducing the old intermediate-support arrangement, the replacement railway crossing provides a much longer span capable of accommodating present and future rail infrastructure beneath it.
This makes the Elphinstone project important not only for motorists but also for Mumbai’s suburban railway expansion.
Heritage of the Old Elphinstone Bridge
Although the century-old structure has been demolished, parts of its heritage are being preserved.
Historical plaques and selected components from the bridge were retained during dismantling. Central Railway officials said construction-era plaques would be incorporated into or preserved alongside the replacement project.
The old bridge had witnessed the transformation of Parel from an industrial mill district into one of Mumbai’s major residential, medical and commercial zones.
Its replacement marks a significant change: a relatively narrow colonial-era railway overbridge is giving way to a modern multi-level transport structure designed for both neighbourhood traffic and metropolitan express connectivity.
Public Transport Near Elphinstone Bridge
Although the road bridge is closed, the surrounding area remains extremely well connected by public transport.
Prabhadevi railway station, formerly Elphinstone Road station, serves the Western Line suburban network. The station was officially renamed in July 2018.
Parel railway station serves the Central Line on the eastern side.
Together, these stations make the area an important suburban-rail interchange zone. Local buses, taxis and app-based cabs also serve Parel, Prabhadevi, Lower Parel and surrounding neighbourhoods.
Because road diversions remain significant during reconstruction, suburban trains can be particularly useful for suitable north-south journeys that do not require a vehicle to cross the railway corridor.

FAQs About Elphinstone Bridge Mumbai
Q1. Is Elphinstone Bridge open to traffic now?
No. The old Elphinstone Bridge was completely dismantled in April 2026, and the replacement is still under construction. The latest project reporting indicates an expected opening in early 2027, rather than the earlier September 2026 target.
Q2. Which bridge can motorists use while Elphinstone Bridge is closed?
The principal alternatives include Tilak Bridge at Dadar, Currey Road Bridge and Chinchpokli Bridge. The most suitable route depends on whether the journey is towards Dadar, Lower Parel, Worli, Parel or Byculla.
Q3. Is Elphinstone Bridge the same as Prabhadevi Bridge?
The old Elphinstone Road Overbridge was also referred to as the Prabhadevi ROB after the surrounding station and locality adopted the Prabhadevi name. “Elphinstone Bridge” nevertheless remains the widely recognised historical name.
Q4. Will the new Elphinstone Bridge connect directly with Atal Setu?
The lower deck will mainly restore local Parel-Prabhadevi connectivity. The upper deck will form part of the Sewri-Worli Elevated Connector, which links towards the Atal Setu network at Sewri and towards Worli on the western side.
Q5. Why is the new bridge much longer across the railway section?
The new design needs to accommodate existing railway operations as well as future additional suburban tracks. The approximately 132-metre railway span allows the rebuilt structure to cross a wider rail corridor with fewer obstructions below.
