Bhumkar Bridge Pune: Location, Route, Traffic & Nearby Areas

Bhumkar Bridge is an important highway structure on the Katraj-Dehu Road Bypass section of NH-48 in Pune, located in the Narhe-Ambegaon belt close to Navale Bridge. It forms part of the busy Pune-Satara/Mumbai-Bengaluru highway corridor and carries a combination of local Pune traffic, interstate buses, cars and heavy commercial vehicles. NHAI officially identifies Bhumkar Pull (MH-04-27) as a highway location on the Pune-Satara section of NH-48.

The bridge is especially important for motorists travelling between Katraj, Narhe, Ambegaon Budruk, Vadgaon Budruk, Warje and the western side of Pune. It also lies on the downhill highway corridor leading from the New Katraj Tunnel towards Navale Bridge, making traffic speed and road safety particularly important here.

Unlike many bridges where an accident section would add little value, Bhumkar Bridge is officially part of a recognised highway blackspot corridor. NHAI has a long-term rectification project covering Bhumkar Pull along with Navale Bridge, Wakad and Bavdhan, while several speed-control and surveillance measures have been introduced on the Bhumkar Bridge–Navale Bridge stretch.

Where is Bhumkar Bridge Located?

Bhumkar Bridge is located in the Narhe area of southern Pune, on the Katraj-Dehu Road Bypass. It lies close to Navale Bridge and forms part of the highway descent used by vehicles coming from the New Katraj Tunnel towards the Mumbai/Warje side. Indian Express specifically identifies Bhumkar Bridge as being on the Mumbai-Bengaluru Highway in Narhe.

The bridge is surrounded by the heavily developed Narhe-Ambegaon residential belt. Local roads and service lanes connect neighbourhood traffic with NH-48, while the main carriageway simultaneously carries vehicles travelling much longer distances between Satara, Pune, Mumbai and other destinations.

This combination of local access and through traffic is one reason Bhumkar Bridge has become an important highway reference point rather than simply an individual bridge structure.

Bhumkar Bridge Route and Road Connectivity

Bhumkar Bridge forms part of the NH-48 corridor through southern Pune and provides convenient access to several important destinations.

Important connections include:

  • Navale Bridge: Located nearby on the same bypass and one of the best-known highway junctions in South Pune.
  • Narhe: Immediate residential and commercial area surrounding the bridge corridor.
  • Ambegaon Budruk: Large residential and educational locality accessible from local roads around the bypass.
  • Katraj: Reached towards the New Katraj Tunnel side.
  • Vadgaon Budruk: Important residential area farther along the highway towards the Sinhagad Road side.
  • Dhayari: Accessible through Narhe and Vadgaon Budruk road connections.
  • Warje: Reached by continuing along the Katraj-Dehu Road Bypass beyond the Navale and Vadgaon sections.
  • Chandni Chowk: Important western Pune highway junction farther along NH-48.

The route is especially significant for vehicles travelling from the Satara and Katraj side towards western and northwestern Pune because Bhumkar Bridge lies directly on this through corridor.

Why is Bhumkar Bridge Important?

Bhumkar Bridge handles two very different types of movement.

The first is long-distance highway traffic. Trucks, buses and cars travelling from Satara, Kolhapur and the Bengaluru side enter Pune through the Katraj corridor and continue towards Navale Bridge, Warje and onward routes.

The second is local traffic generated by Narhe, Ambegaon Budruk and nearby residential areas. Local motorists frequently need to enter or leave NH-48 through service roads and merging points around the bridge.

This mix can create sudden differences in vehicle speed. A heavy truck descending from the Katraj side may be travelling on the same carriageway where local cars and two-wheelers are entering from a service road. NHAI and Pune traffic police have consequently focused on reducing conflict at these merging points.

Traffic Conditions at Bhumkar Bridge

Traffic around Bhumkar Bridge can become heavy during morning and evening peaks, weekends, holiday travel and periods when incidents disrupt NH-48.

The downhill direction from the New Katraj Tunnel towards Bhumkar and Navale Bridge requires particular care. A vehicle breakdown or collision can quickly lead to long queues because the corridor carries substantial through traffic and has limited capacity to absorb sudden disruptions.

Service-road conditions also influence traffic. Residents have complained about unauthorised parking, vendors, encroachments and damaged road surfaces along parts of the wider highway corridor. These problems can push short-distance traffic onto the main carriageway and complicate merging movements.

Motorists using Bhumkar Bridge should therefore allow additional time during peak periods rather than assuming a fixed journey duration.

Bhumkar Bridge Accident and Safety Concerns

For Bhumkar Bridge, safety is a central part of the location’s present-day importance.

NHAI officially lists Bhumkar Pull as blackspot MH-04-27 and has included it in a long-term rectification project along with Navale Bridge, Bavdhan and Wakad.

The dangers became particularly visible in November 2025, when a trailer truck lost control on the Bhumkar Bridge–Navale Bridge stretch and struck multiple vehicles. Eight people ultimately died and 13 vehicles were damaged in the incident. Only days later, another container truck lost control on Bhumkar Bridge and caused a multi-vehicle pile-up, although that incident did not result in injuries.

Further incidents have continued to underline the need for careful driving. In April 2026, a woman died and her two children were injured in a crash near Bhumkar Bridge on the Mumbai-Bengaluru Highway in Narhe.

The recurring problem is therefore not simply the bridge structure itself. The wider gradient, vehicle speed, heavy-truck movement, service-road entries and merging traffic all influence safety along this corridor.

Speed Limit and New Safety Measures

Following the serious crashes in late 2025, Pune Traffic Police introduced stronger controls on the Bhumkar Bridge–Navale Bridge corridor.

The maximum speed was initially reduced to 30 kmph and subsequently revised to 40 kmph from December 4, 2025, after authorities reviewed road conditions and traffic data. The restriction applies to the regulated Bhumkar Bridge–Navale Bridge stretch.

By March 2026, NHAI was implementing a wider safety package between the New Katraj Tunnel and Navale Bridge. Measures included 14 CCTV cameras, three speed-camera gantries, rumble strips, reflective cat-eyes, improved lane markings, street lighting, warning boards and variable-message signs.

Authorities also decided to restrict certain service-road entry points around Bhumkar Bridge, Navale Bridge and Narhe to reduce unsafe merging with highway traffic.

These measures are intended to control vehicle speed before traffic reaches the most heavily used downhill and merging sections.

NHAI Blackspot Improvement Work

Bhumkar Bridge is also part of a dedicated long-term blackspot rectification project.

NHAI project records identify work covering four locations:

Bhumkar Pull (MH-04-27), Navale Bridge (MH-04-26), Bavdhan (MH-04-42) and Wakad (MH-04-41), along with related road-safety infrastructure on the Pune-Satara section of NH-48. NHAI currently lists this project as under construction, with a recorded completion date of October 31, 2026.

The fact that Bhumkar and Navale are treated as separate blackspots is useful because the two names are sometimes casually combined when people describe accidents or congestion on this part of NH-48.

Proposed Elevated Corridor

A much larger long-term solution is also being considered for the entire highway belt.

In March 2026, the Maharashtra government told the state legislature that an approximately 32-km elevated NH-48 corridor from the Swaminarayan Mandir/Jambhulwadi side towards Dehu Road had been proposed at an estimated cost of around ₹6,090 crore. The proposal was awaiting central approval at that stage.

The concept is intended to separate long-distance through traffic from local Pune traffic. If implemented, this could benefit the Bhumkar Bridge and Navale Bridge sections by reducing the number of local and highway vehicles competing for the same road space.

A government announcement has also previously referred to a Ravet–Narhe elevated corridor and improvements to service roads around Narhe and Navale Bridge as part of the broader plan for NH-48.

Public Transport Near Bhumkar Bridge

The wider Narhe and Ambegaon belt is served by PMPML buses, autos and app-based cabs.

Local bus routes connect Narhe and Ambegaon with Katraj, Swargate, Sinhagad Road and other parts of Pune. Road-based transport remains the main public-transport option immediately around Bhumkar Bridge.

There is no operational Pune Metro station directly beside the bridge. For most residents, PMPML buses and local road transport therefore remain more practical for reaching the surrounding neighbourhoods.

Major Landmarks and Facilities Near Bhumkar Bridge

The wider Bhumkar Bridge–Narhe corridor includes several useful landmarks and facilities.

  • Navale Bridge is the most important highway landmark nearby and is closely associated with the same traffic and safety corridor.
  • Swaminarayan Temple is another major road reference point towards the Katraj side and has been used by authorities when describing speed-control sections of the bypass.
  • Narhe contains extensive residential developments, educational institutions, restaurants, vehicle-service facilities and everyday shops.
  • Ambegaon Budruk is another major residential and educational area adjoining the bypass.
  • The New Katraj Tunnel is an important highway landmark farther south and marks the beginning of the downhill movement towards Bhumkar and Navale Bridge.

FAQs About Bhumkar Bridge Pune

Q1. Is Bhumkar Bridge the same as Navale Bridge?

No. They are separate highway points on the same Katraj-Dehu Road Bypass corridor. NHAI separately identifies Bhumkar Pull as blackspot MH-04-27 and Navale Bridge as MH-04-26.

Q2. What is the current speed limit between Bhumkar Bridge and Navale Bridge?

The notified maximum speed on the regulated section is 40 kmph, effective from December 4, 2025. Traffic cameras and speed-enforcement systems are being used along the corridor.

Q3. Why do navigation searches sometimes show another Bhumkar location near Wakad?

“Bhumkar” is also widely used around Bhumkar Chowk in Wakad, which is a different traffic location associated with the Hinjawadi corridor. For this bridge, adding Narhe, Navale Bridge or Katraj-Dehu Road Bypass to a navigation search helps identify the correct Bhumkar Bridge.

Q4. Are service-road entry points restricted near Bhumkar Bridge?

Authorities decided to close selected entries from service roads to the main carriageway at Bhumkar Bridge, Navale Bridge and Narhe as part of safety measures intended to reduce merging conflicts. Motorists should follow the latest signs because local access arrangements can change as improvement work progresses.

Is Bhumkar Bridge being replaced?

There is no indication that the existing bridge is simply being replaced as a standalone project. Instead, NHAI is carrying out long-term blackspot rectification, while a much larger elevated NH-48 corridor has been proposed as a future solution for through traffic.
